How to wire a three-phase motor to single-phase power?

Summary

The recommended solution is generally a variable frequency drive (VFD) designed for a 230 V single-phase input and a 230 V three-phase output. This is only possible if the motor accepts approximately 230 V between phases, often with a delta connection indicated as 230/400 V on its nameplate. A motor only designed for 400/690 V will not achieve its nominal voltage with a standard VFD powered by 230 V.

Start by reading the motor's nameplate

Note the voltages, currents, power, frequency, and star/delta diagram. The indication 230/400 V generally means: delta connection at 230 V three-phase and star connection at 400 V three-phase. The indication 400/690 V normally requires 400 V in delta and is not directly suitable for a 230 V output.

Also, verify that six winding terminals are accessible. An illegible nameplate or modified terminal block must be checked by a winder or an electrician.

Why use a variable frequency drive?

The VFD rectifies the power supply, then recreates three phases with controlled frequency and voltage. Some models are specifically designed for a 200–240 V single-phase input and a three-phase output. The rating must be chosen according to the motor current, load, and manufacturer's derating rules.

The VFD provides soft starting and sometimes speed control. Protections, ventilation, and motor parameters must be configured according to its manual. Not all three-phase VFDs can be powered by a single phase.

Is the capacitor setup equivalent?

A capacitor can create an artificial phase shift on some small asynchronous motors, but starting torque and useful power decrease. The choice of capacitance depends on the motor and the load; a generic formula does not guarantee either starting or absence of overheating.

This solution is primarily suitable for tolerant and properly studied applications. It is not suitable for all machines, especially when starting under load or when constant torque is required.

What protections should be included?

Disconnection, grounding, overcurrent protection, and emergency stop must correspond to the machine. Do not place a contactor between the VFD and the motor without following the manual. After wiring, check the direction of rotation without load and measure the currents.

The 230 V mains presents a fatal risk. Design and commissioning must be carried out or validated by a qualified professional.
